Distance Learning

Waiākeawaena Elementary School has opted to create our own Distance Learning (DL) program utilizing curricular programs (Reading Wonders, Stepping Stones, etc.) that students are already familiar with.  The reason for this decision was to allow for direct teacher instruction (and not just teacher monitoring) while following the already established pacing guides.  This would ensure that grade level standards are being addressed through the continuity of learning programs.  This would also help with an easier transition back to school once campuses are reopened as DL students would be in alignment with students on the blended learning model.  Our Distance Learning program will also address social emotional learning (SEL), PE, Health, Art and Hawaiiana, which is an important part of our school’s mission to support the growth of the whole child.

You can expect that your child will complete approximately 2 hours of work each day (may be more if your child is in the Honors Program).  On some days (depending on A/B grouping) your child will receive live instruction with their distance learning teacher as well as independent work and on the other days, they will access other learning opportunities (SEL, PE, Health, Art, etc.).  The premise being that each student will have access to a staff member each day.

For any general questions regarding Waiākeawaena’s Distance Learning program, please contact the office at 981-7200.  You may also use the Contact Us tab on our school website to send an email.  For specific questions regarding your child’s Distance Learning program (class schedule, classroom expectations, etc.), please contact your child’s teacher.

Unless otherwise advised by your child's teacher, distance learning will take place Monday - Thursday: from 1:00 - 2:00.
